'Winning games is more important than number of goals'

Roy Hodgson is more concerned about six points than anything else

Roy Hodgson says he is more focused on six points from England's next two games rather than the number of goals his team scores.

The Three Lions meet San Marino at Wembley next Thursday night, and in their two previous meetings during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers England netted 13 times without reply.

Three days later Hodgson's men travel to Tallinn to face Estonia, a nation they beat 3-0 on both of their two previous encounters in 2007.

However, after their 2-0 victory in Switzerland last month, Hodgson is more concerned about breaking down their opponents defences and staying top of European Qualifying Group E.

"For me it's about winning the games," he said. "It would be nice to win them and score goals - we scored 13 against San Marino last time but I don't remember getting a great deal of praise or satisfaction about that.

"At the end of the day I would take a much more sanguine approach. If we get the six points, the number of goals we score will be much less important than the points or the performances of the players.

"I can envisage two matches where the teams will be very well-organised and not easy to break down, they will get a lot of players behind the ball."

He continued: "I see us creating a lot of chances but I can't give you a guarantee we'll take them all.

"We did in San Marino [in March 2013], but then we went to Montenegro and drew and we didn't play anywhere near as well.

"There will be absolutely no complacency as we chase the six points, which would mean an excellent start to this new campaign."

Wayne Rooney nets his 41st England goal

One player who will be keen to add to his England goals tally, though, will be captain Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United striker, who is just three caps away from his century, is also within touching distance of the England goalscoring record of 49, held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney - currently his country's fourth highest scorer - needs just three more to equal Jimmy Greaves' haul of 44, and Hodgson is backing his skipper to surpass that sooner rather than later.

"I hope he does," said Hodgson. "I want him to score as many goals as possible. But I'm not going to go down the road of saying it's all about goals. It's all about victories.

"But of course it will be good for his confidence."
