A tale of two Boroughs in FA Cup Third Round Qualifying

Sunday 12 Oct 2014
Eastbourne Borough and Greenwich Borough both advance

Darren Lok emerged from the bench to fire Eastbourne Borough into The FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying with a dramatic added-time winner against Kingstonian.

With the bulk of the Third Round Qualifying fixtures being played on Saturday, this was one of only two ties played on Sunday but there was no shortage of drama.

Eastbourne needed penalties to get past Enfield in the previous round and, although no shoot-out was required here, Lok could only find the key to progression in time added on.

Simon Johnson had opened the scoring for Borough a minute before the break and when Lloyd Foot doubled the advantage 10 minutes after the restart it looked like the visitors side were set to sail through.

But back came the hosts Kingstonian with a stirring comeback inspired by a familiar face for Eastbourne fans.

Elvis Hammond, the former Fulham forward, played for Borough last season but he came back to haunt them when he made it 2-1 in the 61st minute to set up a grandstand finish.

And it was that man Hammond who notched an equaliser for Kingstonian, who had pressed hard throughout the second half, 11 minutes from time.

The goal seemed to have switched momentum entirely but substitute Lok had other ideas after being thrown on by manager Tommy Widdrington after the scores were tied.

In the 92nd minute, Lok swooped to make it 3-2 and nudge his side into the next stage of the competition.

Sunday's other tie was less dramatic but no less important for Greenwich Borough who produced a Cup upset to beat Redhill 1-0 and reach the Fourth Round Qualifying for the first time in their history.

The Southern Counties side had Billy Bennett to thank after his goal in first-half stoppage time was enough to secure the victory and a place in the hat for the next round.
