'We seem to do well against Hastings' says Cray chairman

Saturday 18 Oct 2014
The FA Trophy kicks off this weekend

Cray Wanderers chairman Gary Hillman wants to carry on haunting old rivals Hastings United in their FA Trophy meeting on Sunday.

The Wanderers are one of the oldest football clubs in the world, dating back to 1860, and Hillman knows all about the competition after 20 years at the helm.

Despite the club's stuttering start in the Isthmian League Premier Division this term, Hillman is confident of victory against their Division One South opponents and believes his men have a hold over their close rivals.

"We've always had good games with Hastings, mainly because we seem to do well against them," Hillman told TheFA.com.

"We're their bogey side and they will be keen to get one over on us, so it will be a big test. But hopefully we can continue our good form against them this weekend.

"It's obviously a big game for us. I've been chairman here for 20 years and we haven't always had the greatest of successes in these competitions.

"It's welcome investment for the club and a great opportunity to play against big sides in this competition.

"[Trophy games] are always big occasions and present great opportunities. We will be hoping to progress as far as we can this season."

The tie has been moved to Sunday as part of the Wanderers' ground-share agreement with neighbours Bromley.

The change will give local people the opportunity to go and support their local side and Hillman expects there to be a good atmosphere as the two sets of supporters back The Wands.

"It's always a good time to play. Bromley supporters usually come along and show their support," Hillman revealed.

"Hastings tend to bring a large contingent themselves so it should create a good atmosphere - the players should relish the chance to play in front of a good crowd."
