Kieran Gibbs celebrates his equaliser for Arsenal

Kieran Gibbs scored only the fifth goal of his six-year professional career to kickstart a late Arsenal recovery against Anderlecht.

With one minute of normal time remaining The Gunners were trailing their Champions League clash 1-0 following Andy Najar’s 71st-minute strike at Stade Constant Vanden Stock.

But Gibbs had other ideas, and converted a pinpoint cross from England team-mate Calum Chambers with a low volley at the far post.

Then seven seconds into added time substitute Lukas Podolski drilled home from close range after a goal-mouth scramble to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

England’s Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck both started for Arsenal and were replaced in the second half, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came on a substitute as Arsene Wenger tried to trigger a dramatic comeback on his 65th birthday.

Liverpool’s Three Lions contingent endured a tough evening at Anfield as they went down 3-0 to a rampant Real Madrid side.

Glen Johnson, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling started for Brendan Rodgers’s side, who conceded all three goals in the first half.

Adam Lallana came on as a substitute, while Rickie Lambert was on the bench for Liverpool.
