The former Northampton Town and Wycombe Wanderers midfielder has joined The FA to work under Mike Rigg, Head of Talent ID, where he will help seek out and work with the brightest young players in the country.
And he says he is still "pinching himself" at the opportunity to unearth some hidden gems for the benefit of the England setup.
Brown, who held roles as academy manager at QPR and a national scout for Everton before becoming an Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) auditor, told TheFA.com: "This opportunity arose and I was delighted to get the job.

"If you look in the short-term, the younger age groups are really thriving and there’s a wealth of talent down there.
"I recognised that early from my EPPP stuff, going into clubs and seeing the talent was there, and I was under no illusion of the pool of players that were developing.
"It’s hugely exciting to work with The FA and national teams, I’m still pinching myself each day – I’m like a kid in a sweet shop and I’m waiting for someone to wake me up from this dream.
"I can see already the wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm in all the staff is tremendous and I want to be a part of a project that makes a difference and sees us win something at senior level."
Brown’s role will involve him working alongside Rigg in developing the relationship between the national sides and clubs.
And having welcomed Brown into his team, Rigg believes The FA has pulled off "a real scoop" with his addition.
"Steve will bring unbelievable wealth and knowledge which The FA is really proud to have.
"He comes from a brilliant background through playing and working at the highest level, and to bring people like that into the organisation in order to bring us onto the next level is a real scoop for us."

Explaining more about the role, Rigg said: "What we have to try and do is build up a fundamental kind of understanding of what the national coaches require.
"We are building up a very clear of how we want our teams to play, and fundamental to that is the profile of the players we think we need to fit in that."
He added: "What has become even more crucial to winning at the highest level is that the team is more important than the individual so we have to make sure that we are supporting the coaches at every level that we can.
"It’s our job to set up a network and a real detailed scouting programme. Essentially, we will try to build a really close relationship with the clubs.
"It is quite straight forward what we have to do in some respects, we know who the players are and where they are, our job is to now build that relationship with the clubs to find out everything we can about the players from the clubs.
"We then need to bring that to the doors of our national coaches."
