The 20-year-old defender has actually been with Gareth Southgate’s squad since Sunday evening, as he was invited to join in with training before the rest of the group fly out to Kaunas on Thursday.
But he has now been added to the official squad for the games after taking a full part in the training sessions at St. George’s Park and following the withdrawal of Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier on Monday afternoon.
Gibson was first called into the Under-21s squad for last May’s game with Wales in Swansea and the subsequent Toulon Tournament in France after previously winning caps at U16 and U17 level.
He had missed the early games for Middlesbrough in the Championship after picking up a hamstring injury on the opening day of the season, but has been back in training for the last ten days with both club and country.
