Wayne Rooney praised his team-mates after England kicked off their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with victory over Switzerland.

The Three Lions were 2-0 winners in Basel, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice, and the England captain was delighted with the result.

“I thought we played some great stuff today and we took our chances. On the break we hit with the speed we have been talking about,” said Rooney.

“It’s a great result for us in the first game and Danny [Welbeck] got two goals so I am delighted for him."

Rooney says England showed a huge improvement following last week's 1-0 win over Norway, and felt that the work in training over the past few days has paid dividends.

“I think we all knew the game on Wednesday would be tough after the World Cup, but we got the result we wanted," he said.

“Tonight was the most important match and we were focused more on this. We have worked on our defensive shape and breaking fast.

“We are pleased as these things we worked on have paid off tonight.”
