Michel Platini believes that London will be the perfect city to host the conclusion to EURO 2020.
Speaking at the announcement that Wembley Stadium would host the Final and both semi-finals of the 2020 European Championship, the UEFA president said he was a relishing a “week of football in a great capital”.
He said: “I would like to make one thing clear. In the evaluation of the bids, London was first. London had the best bid, the best mark of all.
“Wembley is a marvellous stadium, we know it well, because we have staged two recent UEFA Champions League Finals there."
He added: “There will be a week of football in a great capital - London. I know the festive aspect there, and how they welcome people.
“I hope that London will be equal to the task, so that all those who love football will spend a magnificent week there, and see three exceptional matches in a very fine stadium.”
London is one of 13 cities to be awarded the right to host matches in UEFA’s ‘EURO for Europe’, slated to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Championship.
Platini said: “EURO 2020 is an idea that I put in place some years ago. I absolutely wanted the last week to be a week of national team football – I also wanted this competition to take place throughout Europe, and you saw today that it will go from east to west.”
