A crowd of over 200 watched the sides battle it out and Salford defended stoutly until the death when victory was snatched away from them against a team placed one division higher.
Ashton edged a tight first half and came close to taking an early lead when striker Kayde Coppin's low cross across the goalmouth only needed to be turned in, but the ball evaded everyone.
However, the best chance in the opening 45 minutes fell to the away side, as Salford striker Danny Webber rattled the crossbar with a delightful chip over goalkeeper Paul Phillips on 21 minutes.
The breakthrough arrived after 54 minutes when Salford's Rother fired home a first-time volley into the roof of the net after latching onto a cross from the wing.
But Ashton ensured a replay when a last-gasp chance was converted to take this tie to a replay at Moor Lane on Tuesday.
