Rooney hits home Manchester United's second goal against Aston Villa
England captain Wayne Rooney was back among the goals on Saturday as he scored in Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Aston Villa.

The striker was unfortunate not to score in the Three Lions’ 1-1 draw with Italy in Turin on Tuesday, but he netted a stunning second-half goal at Old Trafford in United’s victory over Aston Villa.

It was Rooney’s 185th Premier League goal and he was joined in the United line-up by fellow England stars Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young.

Another of Roy Hodgson’s starters from Turin, Fabian Delph, was involved from the start in the Villa midfield.

Over at Goodison Park, it didn’t take Everton defender Phil Jagielka long to get back to business after his impressive performance for England in Italy.

He opened the scoring for the Toffees after just 16 minutes of their game with Southampton and that proved to be the winner as Roberto Martinez's side look to edge their way up the table.

Jagielka was partnered in the Everton defence by England Under-21s star John Stones, whilst Three Lions Leighton Baines and Ross Barkley were also involved from the start.

For the Saints, England defenders Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand were back in action for their club after the international get-together, along with Under-21s midfielder James Ward-Prowse who scored the winner in a 3-2 win against Germany on Monday.

And Ward-Prowse came close to scoring a first-half equaliser too, when a trademark free-kick whistled narrowly wide of the post.

In the day’s early game at the Emirates Stadium, Three Lions midfielder Jordan Henderson was on the scoresheet for Liverpool who succumbed to a 4-1 defeat against a rampant Arsenal.

Henderson was joined in the Reds line-up by fellow England squad-mate Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge came on as a substitute for the second half.

For the hosts, Arsene Wenger selected no English players in his starting line-up but striker Danny Welbeck was introduced as a second-half sub.

And there was a special moment for U20s midfielder Matty Grimes, who made his Premier League debut for Swansea City by coming on as a late substitute for Three Lions star Jonjo Shelvey in their 3-1 win over Hull City at the Liberty Stadium.
