The England Under-18s striker, who struck twice in the Young Lions’ 6-1 win over Switzerland last month, has been a regular member of the Magpies first-team squad this campaign having made his senior debut last season.
He appeared off the bench for the final few moments in last weekend’s defeat against rivals Sunderland, leading to a number of the club’s fans to call for his inclusion from the start for the Premier League clash against Liverpool – but the youngster is prepared to bide his time.
“I’m 18 - I’ve got to be patient and my time will come,” he told the Chronicle.
“When I get that chance I’ve got to take it and be a man.”
Newcastle head coach John Carver has spoken previously of his intention to protect the club’s youngsters, and Armstrong says he has to continue working hard to impress his boss.
“Maybe he thinks with me being so young he doesn’t want to chuck me in too early - I respect him so much for even putting me on though,” added the forward.
“I’m in and around the first team so it’s good for me. I’ve got a good bond with the head coach. I know him really well so it’s always going to be good.
“I just want to keep working hard in training and show him what I can do.”
Armstrong and his Newcastle team-mates travel to Merseyside to face Liverpool at 8pm on Monday evening.
