The Leeds United midfielder Cook claimed the prize at Sunday’s ceremony, seeing off fellow nominee and Charlton Athletic defender Gomez and Millwall’s Fred Onyedinma.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a tremendous 12 months since winning the European U17s Championship with the Young Lions last summer, becoming a first-team regular at Elland Road in his breakthrough season.
"I didn’t expect this season to be as good as it has been. I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said after picking up the award.
"I’d like to thank the club for what they’ve done for me and my family for the support.
"I’ve just been trying to balance everything – schoolwork and playing games – it’s been hard.”

Cook developed his game under Neil Redfearn in the club’s academy, and the partnership is continuing the blossom since the pairs elevation to first-team duties this campaign – and the youngster reserved special praise for his manager.
"Neil Redfearn has believed in me, he gave me my chance,” he added.
"He’s been with me since I was younger and brought me through. I’m really grateful for what he’s done.
"There’s a lot of good talent coming through and it’s really good to play in that environment."

Cook was not the only member of Sean O’Driscoll’s Young Lions squad to be recognised at the event.
MK Dons midfielder Dele Alli, who will join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, was named as Young Player of the Year.
The 19-year-old Dons academy product has enjoyed an impressive second season as a professional, making 41 appearances and scoring 16 goals, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 triumph over Crewe Alexandra.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alli said: “It's been a really good season so far and I wouldn't have been able to do any of it without my team-mates.
"I also can't thank the gaffer enough for everything he has done - he's always had faith in me.”
