Mixed night for Young Lions in the League Cup first round

Karlan Ahearne-Grant scored his first goal for Charlton Athletic
The road to Wembley began in the League Cup on Tuesday and a number of England’s youth internationals were involved in the thick of the action.

Under-18s international Karlan Ahearne-Grant will no doubt have most cause to remember the evening, the striker scoring the first professional goal of his career.

The 17-year-old struck the second for Charlton Athletic as they defeated Dagenham & Redbridge 4-1 at The Valley.

Freddie Woodman, capped at U19s level, was in action for Crawley Town and was busy from the off at the Abax Stadium as the hosts Peterborough United took the lead inside two minutes. A cross from the right was drilled in low and Connor Washington stuck out a foot to poke home inside the near post.

League One Posh, who are a division higher than Town, were in the ascendency and only Newcastle United-loanee Woodman’s strong palm over the bar stopped the goalscorer from adding a second with a turn and volley from 18 yards.

It could have proved a vital stop if Matt Harold had converted for Crawley moments before the break. Luke Rooney jinked inside the right-back and found Harold at the back post but he somehow failed to find the target with a header.

Woodman, who won the European U17 Championship with the Young Lions last summer, was called back into action shortly after the restart as he denied Washington once again – but seconds later he was powerless as he was beaten for the second time.

Freddie Woodman kept a clean sheet on his Crawley Town debut

Freddie Woodman's Crawley side suffered defeat at Peterborough

Winger Harry Anderson broke clear just right of the centre and he pulled the ball across the edge of the box for Marcus Maddison to stroke the ball into Woodman’s bottom right hand corner.

Crawley were rocking as Peterborough could smell blood, and the former were lucky not to fall further behind as captain Sonny Bradley’s attempted clearance from a ball over the top smashed off the post and to safety.

Woodman was called into action again on the hour mark as he parried away a fierce free-kick from Marcus Maddison, but any hopes of a comeback evaporated as Gwion Edwards dragged a shot wide and they went down 2-0.

Chuba Akpom made it two goals in two games for Hull City since joining on loan from Arsenal. The U20s striker gave the Championship club the lead away to Accrington Stanley two minutes into extra time after coming off the bench, but a spirited fightback from the hosts saw the contest finish 2-2 – with the League Two underdogs only coming undone in the resulting penalty shoot-out.

Senior international goalkeeper Rob Green kept a clean sheet as QPR won 3-0 away to Yeovil, and U21s striker Cauley Woodrow helped Fulham to victory on the road also as they defeated Wycombe Wanderers 1-0.Last season's U19s captain Bryn Morris received a caution as he lined up for Coventry City in midfield during their 1-1 draw at Rochdale, but the Sky Blues went down 5-3 on penalties at Spotland.

Demarai Gray (U20s) came off the bench for Birmingham in their 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers as did Sam Gallagher (U20s) for MK Dons as two late goals saw them come from behind to claim a 2-1 home success over Leyton Orient. Giorgio Rasulo, an U17s international, played the full game for the hosts.

U18s attacker Sheyi Ojo claimed an assist as Wolves defeated Newport County 2-1 at Molineux, with England U20s duo Dominic Iorfa and Kortney Hause also playing the full game for the Championship side. Two of their international team-mates were also on the winning side, albeit by penalties, as Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell featured for Barnsley as they drew 1-1 at Scunthorpe.

Taylor Moore in action against Poland

Taylor Moore was in action for RC Lens in the French League Cup

Jake Forster-Caskey, a member of Gareth Southgate's European U21s Championship squad, was subbed after 73 minutes of Brighton's 1-0 win at Southend United, Christian Walton (U20s) was in goal for Bury as they triumphed 2-1 away to Wigan and midfielder Louis Reed (U18s) appeared as a late sub for Sheffield United in their 1-0 victory at Morecambe.

Over the channel in France, England U18s man Taylor Moore was in action for RC Lens. The youngster, who can also play central defence, played 70 minutes in midfield but suffered the agony of defeat as his side lost on penalties after a goalless draw at home to AC Ajaccio in the League Cup.
