Hodgson and his assistant Ray Lewington spent the day at the Oval, watching both Australia and England in training ahead of the fifth and final Test match of the current series.
And after speaking to the England players and head coach Trevor Bayliss, as well as Australian counterpart Darren Lehmann and their squad, Hodgson admits he enjoyed the experience of hearing from elite level sportsmen in a different field.

"You take away any similarities between the way they work and the way we try to work, but most importantly of all, you take away the conversations which we are lucky enough to have with the coaches," revealed the Three Lions boss.
"They're in the same position as you are, managing a group of players to try and achieve success at the highest possible level in their particular sport.
"What we've got to do is try to achieve the same level of success as the England cricket team and if we can have a summer in 2016 as they've had here then hopefully we'll receive a similar level of support."
The presence of Hodgson and Lewington also gave an extra edge to the England squad’s traditional kick-around before training.
"I was impressed actually," Hodgson told England Cricket after watching the likes of Jimmy Anderson, Joe Root and Stuart Broad show off their football skills.
"There’s no doubt that the standard was quite good but I knew it would be because people who can play cricket at such a high level, most of them will have played some form of football in their schooldays before they had to really concentrate on one sport.
"I had a chance to have a few words before they started and congratulated them really because it's such a fantastic achievement in winning the Ashes.
"I've been watching the cricket with not only great interest but with great pride and I think England have played remarkably well in this test series and have deservedly won the Ashes back and that's an achievement."
Hodgson will name his squad to play San Marino and Switzerland next week, as the Three Lions aim to secure qualification for EURO 2016 next summer.
