The Swansea City midfielder was named in Hodgson’s group on Sunday night as they prepare for their next two Euro Qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.
And after winning his last senior cap, ironically against San Marino, in 2012, he’s now keen to make a good impression as the Three Lions look to secure their place at next summer’s Euro Finals.
"I don't want to just go there and not play," said Shelvey, after Swansea’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.
"I want to get the chance to play a game.
"If I get the chance, I know I can show everyone what I am capable of."
The 23-year-old has been a regular on the international scene over the years with England caps at U16, U17, U19 and U21 level to his name.
But his last involvement in Hodgson’s squad came last year when he was an un-used substitute against both San Marino and Estonia.
Now, he’s hoping the good form he’s shown since the start of the new campaign can put him in with a chance of featuring over the next eight days.
"I've started this season well," he admits.
"But there's still a lot more to come and I will keep working hard and try to kick on."
Shelvey and his squad-mates meet at St. George's Park on Tuesday, when they will begin training ahead of the game in San Marino on Saturday.
It's then back to Wembley, where Switzerland will be the opponents on Tuesday 8 September.
