But after helping Gareth Southgate's side qualify for the Euro Finals over the previous two years, he was with the U21s in a bid to help them end their campaign with success during May and June.
And in his four U21 appearances in 2015, the former Birmingham City man did his job in two of the games by keeping a clean sheet in a pre-Euro win over Belarus at Barnsley and then in the 1-0 victory over eventual Euro champions Sweden at the Finals in Czech Republic.
Despite the Euros ending in disappointment for Butland and his team-mates, he's since enjoyed a great season with Stoke by taking over the No1 spot at the Britannia Stadium and challenging Joe Hart for the England senior keeper's role.
Butland is one of the five contenders for the Vauxhall England U21s Player of the Year for 2015 and polls are now open for the award, with members of the England Supporters Club able to cast their vote for one of the five candidates.
