England star Karen Carney has signed for FA WSL 1 champions and SSE Women’s FA Cup winners Chelsea.
The 28-year-old former Birmingham City captain will officially link up with Emma Hayes’s side on New Year’s Day, having agreed a two-year deal with the Blues.
Carney scored twice on England’s run to winning bronze at this summer’s World Cup.

She said: “I am thrilled to have signed for Chelsea Ladies.
“The team won the double last season to establish themselves as the top club in the country and I am excited about the prospect of helping to build on that.
“It is the right point in my career to begin a new challenge and having spoken to Emma we share the same ambitions and I firmly believe this is the place to achieve those goals.”
Carney worked with Hayes during the duo’s time at Arsenal and the midfielder has also played in America, for Chicago Red Stars.
She has earned 110 England caps, making her debut against Italy in 2005. Her 100th appearance came against Germany at Wembley in November last year.
Hayes added: “I am absolutely delighted Karen has agreed to join the club.
“She was a major target and a genuine world-class addition to the squad.
“I know her well having worked with her previously and she has a fantastic character both on and off the pitch. She is a student of the game and brings additional leadership to our squad.
“I see Karen complementing the talent we already possess in the final third. All our attacking players will benefit hugely from her vision and passing.”
Meanwhile Blues midfielder and recent England debutant Laura Coombs will join Liverpool on a season-long loan.
