England's Alex Scott: 'You can see the World Cup effect'

Friday 10 Jul 2015
Alex Scott is one of England's most experienced players with 127 caps
With 127 England caps to her name, it is fair to say Alex Scott is well-placed to note the increase in popularity of women’s football.

The Arsenal defender has featured for the Lionesses in three World Cups and three Euro Finals over the years, but admits she is seen nothing like what has welcomed the England squad back from Canada this week.

Mark Sampson’s side secured a best-ever finish of third place after beating Germany in Edmonton last weekend, ensuring a warm welcome back to England on Monday morning.

Alex Scott returns to action for Arsenal in The FA WSL this weekend

Scott joined her squad-mates for a trip to Kensington Palace on Thursday, where the Lionesses enjoyed breakfast with HRH The Duke of Cambridge before joining pupils from Essendine School and Jubilee School for a training session.

And the 30-year-old revealed it was immediately clear that the youngsters knew exactly who they were playing with.

"This is what it's about," Scott told FATV.

"They've [the pupils] been saying they were watching the games, so for us to come out here and enjoy this means a lot to them.

"When they're naming names, such as the goalscorers and asking 'where's Fara Williams?' it’s great to see.

"That was the main message and you can see that we've had an effect.”

Scott will be back in FA WSL action this weekend, as Arsenal host Liverpool Ladies at Boreham Wood FC on Sunday evening. To see the full list of fixtures and how you can see your local WSL team, click here.
