The England midfielder was confirmed as the Reds’ new on-field leader on 10 July following the departure of club legend Steven Gerrard at the end of the 2014-15 campaign.
And the 25-year-old acknowledges he will have to do things his way when the new season begins.
“I don’t think there will ever be another Steven Gerrard in terms of talent and leadership,” he said.
“But it was good for me to play with him and learn from him.
“He’s a footballer who I had so much respect for and for a leadership aspect as well.
“I have taken as much as I could from him and I will try and use that. But going forward, I have got to do what I believe is right and what I want to do.”
After moving from Sunderland in the summer of 2011, Henderson played alongside Gerrard for four seasons at Anfield.
During that time they lifted the League Cup together in 2012, and came within two points of the Premier League title in 2014 – eventually missing out to Manchester City.
And although Henderson says he and the club must move on from the Gerrard era, he knows the former skipper is still there for him if needed.
“I can still learn from him, even when he is playing so far away”

“I still speak to Stevie on a regular basis,” Henderson continued.
“He always tells me that if I need any advice, he is always on the end of a phone.
“When he scored the other day, I got in touch with him straight away. I was delighted for him and you could see how much it meant to him from the way he celebrated.
“I can still learn from him, even when he is playing so far away.
“He just said he would always be there for me, really. He was over the moon for me. The message he sent was nice. He was one of the first to get in touch!
“He said if I ever need anything he’s on the other end of the phone.”
