Mayumi Pacheco believes Liverpool have fired a warning shot to the rest of their group after starting their FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup bid with a 2-0 victory against local rivals Everton.
Natasha Dowie scored both goals and had another two ruled out for offside in front of 1,073 fans inside the Select Security Stadium.
Pacheco, 16, said: “We’re here to do business, we’re here to win and we’re here to win the cup. It’s a great way to start the competition.”
The current holders Manchester City beat Doncaster Rovers Belles 3-0 but were held in the opening 45 minutes by FA WSL2 leaders Doncaster Rovers Belles.
Almost 1,300 supporters watched on as Isobel Christiansen, Nikita Parris and England striker Toni Duggan all scored in the second half.
“I’m delighted we’ve got the win and we knew Doncaster was a tough place to come,” Christiansen acknowledged.
“They’re top of WSL 2 so they’ve obviously proven themselves in the women’s game.”
Arsenal also won by a 3-0 scoreline but England legend Rachel Yankey felt Watford's performance belied their position at the bottom of FA WSL 2.
The Hornets did not crumble after first-half goals from Leah Williamson, Chloe Kelly and Yankey.
"They needed a little bit more in front of goal to put us under pressure but I wouldn't have expected from the way they played that they were bottom of their league," said Yankey after the match.
It was a dream first start for Yeovil Town’s Sarah Hill as the 16-year-old scored the only goal of the game against Oxford United.
“For the last few months, during pre-season and the mid-season break I have been training hard and hoping to get on the pitch and now I have, so I am very happy,” she said.
The day before Chelsea captain Gilly Flaherty had claimed their result was never in doubt despite having to come from behind to beat Reading.
Goals from the Royals’ Rebecca Jane and Lauren Bruton cancelled out Flaherty’s opener but Millie Bright and Ji So-Yun won it for the Blues.
“I don’t think anyone ever doubted that we could ever come back and win it,” Flaherty said.
Jess Clarke’s double in Notts County’s 2-1 win over Birmingham City – which included an injury-time winner – took her tally to four in two games, however, she insisted: “Hopefully the goals will keep on coming but we win as a group and we have been performing really well, which is a credit to the girls.”
A hat-trick from Fliss Gibbons helped Millwall return to winning ways in a pulsating 5-3 thriller against London Bees.
And there was more drama in Durham as an injury-time goal handed Sunderland a 2-1 win in their local derby.
Durham’s Sarah Wilson thought she had salvaged a point when she cancelled out Kiera Ramshaw’s 76th-minute opener but the home team’s goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse turned the ball into her own net in the 91st minute.
On Tuesday night Bristol Academy’s Caroline Weir had kicked off this year’s competition in style as she scored from 45 yards to set her side on their way to a 4-0 win at Aston Villa.
