Roy Hodgson hailed Jack Wilshere's performance after the Arsenal star steered England to victory in Slovenia.

The midfielder hit two stunning goals to haul the Three Lions back into the game after Milivoje Novakovic's cool finish put the hosts a goal up at half time.

Wilshere's brace looked to have wrapped up a deserved victory but Nejc Pecnik’s 85th-minute header rattled England before Wayne Rooney's 48th goal for his country clinched all three points and a 3-2 win for the visitors.

And Hodgson claimed Wilshere's second half performance was the catalyst for his side's resurgence. He said: "Both of Jack's strikes were fantastic and really summed up his game in particular the second half where he took over the midfield.

"It's good to see he's not only creating chances for us and doing his work defensively but also chipping in with two very important goals that put us on the front foot after coming in on the back foot at half time."

Wilshere's goals were his first in an England shirt since he made his senior debut 28 matches ago.

And the 23-year-old said: "It's nice to get my first couple of goals for England. It's been a long time coming.

"Ive had a few chances in previous games and today, luckily, they went in. When the first one came to me I just hit it and it went in so that gave me confidence for the second one."

He added: "I've been open about saying I want to add more goals to my game. You look at the top midfielders for England, like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes - they all scored goals and it's something I want to add to my game."
