Bamford notched as Boro go top of the league
Gareth Southgate will have been looking on eagerly as his crop of England Under-21s continued their good form in front of goal on Tuesday.

After the hot streak of Tottenham Hotspurs’ Harry Kane in recent months, two of his international team-mates notched on Tuesday – but whilst it was delight for Middlesbrough’s Patrick Bamford, Saido Berahino saw his efforts come to nothing for West Bromwich Albion.

Having netted what looked to be a late equaliser for the Baggies against Aston Villa to cancel out Gabby Agbonlahor’s first half strike, Berahino and his colleagues were to taste defeat as England international goalkeeper Ben Foster gave away a penalty in additional time which Christian Benteke converted to secure a 2-1 win for the Villians.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Fraser Forster, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand, all capped for the Three Lions by Roy Hodgson, were celebrating at St Mary’s as they shut out Crystal Palace – with their Southampton team-mate Sadio Mane netting an 83rd minute winner to lift the Saints to within one point of the top four.

Down in the Championship, and it was delight for Bamford and his team-mate for England U21s and Boro Ben Gibson. The on-loan Chelsea forward scored the first goal and created the second as the north east side ran out 3-0 winners over Millwall – a result that lifted them to the top of the table.

Liam Moore, another of Southgate’s youngsters and who joined Brentford from Leicester City until the end of the season last week, helped the Bees to a 4-1 triumph over Huddersfield Town.

And another U21s man, Cauley Woodrow, was also in action for Fulham at Watford, but the forward endured a frustrating evening in front of goal as the Whites went down 1-0 at Vicarage Road.

It was an enjoyable evening for England U19s defender Joe Gomez as he played the full match for Charlton Athletic as they defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1.

And in League Two, Lewis Baker (U20s) netted his first professional goal for MK Dons after joining on loan from Chelsea, but it was not enough to stop them from slipping to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Chesterfield.
