England Blind take on Argentina in the final on Saturday

England's Blind team are through to the IBSA World Games final after a comprehensive 8-0 victory against Georgia.

Following wins over Japan and host nation South Korea, and a hard-fought draw with China, England took on Georgia bidding to book a spot in their first final since 2009.

Despite the handsome winning margin, it was not all plain sailing for England against a team rated above them in the world rankings.

Although the Three Lions had most of the possession they could not press home the advantage after Roy Turnham had given them when he opened the scoring on 16 minutes.

Turnham picked the ball up inside his own half and dribbled past three defenders to finish off the far post to make it 1-0.

Following that, chance after chance was wasted and head coach Jon Pugh needed all his inspirational influence to galvanise the team to produce a more positive response in the second half – and what a response he got.

In the first two minutes England had more shots on goal than in the entire first half.

The team were more fluid and played with pace and in a more direct running game.

Then the goals came thick and fast, starting on 32 minutes through captain Keryn Seal.

He scored from 12 metres out with a low shot.

Roy Turnham made it 3-0 after a corner move which he drove into the centre and lifted his shot over a shell-shocked keeper.

He followed that up a minute later with a fine shot from ten metres that completed his hat-trick on 39 minutes.

The goals kept coming. Seal picked the ball up deep in the corner and dribbled past the stunned Georgia defence to finish confidently after 45 minutes.

“I am very proud with the team for making their first final for six years”

That was followed by Jon Heenan scoring his first international goal, as he converted from the penalty spot after Seal was upended in the box.

Straight from kick-off Keryn Seal continued the scoring when he won the ball from the Georgia start to dribble through and finish with ease.

Roy Turnham completed the rout with a well taken goal after 49 minutes.

After the game, head coach Jon Pugh spoke of his delight at the second-half performance.

“I am very proud with the team for making their first final for six years,” he said.

“They have worked extremely hard in the last year and we are seeing improvements each month.

“We came into this tournament as one of the lowest ranked teams but our results have shown that we are much better than our current ranking.

“I am particularly pleased with the way we responded after I had some harsh words with the players at half-time, but to score seven goals is a testament to their improvement as a team.”

England face Argentina in the final at the Seoul Olympic Park on Saturday 16 May at 4pm (8am BST).
