Adam Lallana celebrated his latest England call-up with an early goal against FC Sion, but it wasn’t enough to lift Liverpool to a Europa League victory.
Midfielder Lallana gave the hosts a perfect start as he scored from close range at Anfield following a Divock Origi cross after just four minutes.
But the Swiss side drew level after 17 minutes, thanks to a cool finish from Ebenezer Assifuah.
Lallana, who has 15 senior England caps to his name, went close to a winner as did Origi, but both were denied by Andris Vanins in the FC Sion goal and England senior newcomer Danny Ings also had a goal ruled out for offside
Also turning out for Liverpool were Lallana and Ings' England team-mate Nathaniel Clyne – as well as Jordon Ibe and Joe Gomez from the Under-21s and Jordan Rossiter from the U19s – but the Reds were forced to settle for a second consecutive draw in Group B.
Meanwhile, Delle Alli also shone after his first England call-up but he too had to settle for a draw as Tottenham Hotspur conceded late on in a 1-1 draw at Monaco.
Teenager Alli’s pace and movement caused the hosts all sorts of problems and it led to Tottenham’s opener as the 19-year-old’s shot was saved before Erik Lamela tapped home the rebound.
But Spurs – who handed starts to Danny Rose and Eric Dier and saw Tom Carroll and Andros Townsend climb off the bench – couldn’t hold on as Stephan El Shaarawy headed in Nabil Dirar's cross with nine minutes left.
