The Stoke City keeper was captain and a key member of Gareth Southgate’s Under-21 squad during their last Euro campaign.
Prior to that, the 22-year-old had been capped at all levels by England, including a single senior appearance for his debut in August 2012, and has developed his game via a string of loan spells at club level.
And with Butland now set to take his place in Roy Hodgson’s line-up for their final Euro Qualifier, Southgate believes the progress of the former Birmingham City player should be a target for all of his current squad.
"He’s a real example of how the England development system has worked," said Southgate.
"He’s had experiences at various levels on loan with his clubs, but has played junior Euro Championships and junior World Cups with us.
"I think England has been as big a part of his development as his club career has, there have been certain periods when we have almost kept things alive for him in a playing sense and been a focus for him.
"He was a terrific captain for us last year and we’re all looking forward to watching him in Lithuania."
Southgate’s side are currently at St. George’s Park preparing for their Euro Qualifier with Kazakhstan in Coventry on Tuesday evening.
