Margate are near the bottom of the National League South – one tier below Forest Green Rovers – having been promoted from the Isthmian Premier via the play-offs in 2014-15.
They have an impressive record in the Emirates FA Cup though, having knocked several Football League clubs out of the competition, and will fancy themselves to cause another upset in front of the cameras on 24 October.
As a Kent League side in the late 1920s they won 2-0 at Gillingham, then in the old Division Three South, before going out at Northampton Town in the Second Round.
In the ‘30s they had outstanding wins against QPR and Crystal Palace and continued their giant-killings exploits after the war.
The 1972-73 season was a special one for ‘The Gate’. A year after losing 11-0 to a Ted MacDougall-inspired Bournemouth they beat Division Three Swansea City and non-League Walton & Hersham to set up a dream home tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
A crowd of 14,500 saw Chivers (2), Knowles, Pratt, Pearce and Peters rattle in the goals in a 6-0 win for Spurs.
Margate's guests, Forest Green Rovers, have only played in The Cup since the late ‘70s.
They reached the Second Round in 1999, losing 3-0 at home to Torquay United of Division Three, but have made their mark in recent seasons with two appearances in the third round.
In 2009 they lost a Cup classic 4-3 to Derby County of the Championship, a crowd of 4,836 at New Lawn having seen the non-Leaguers take a 2-0 lead.
Rovers, from Nailsworth in Gloucestershire, made it to the same stage a year later after accounting for Mansfield Town and Bath City in the first two proper rounds.
Then they were drawn away to Notts County, League Two champions in that season, and lost by the odd goal in three.
