Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren insists he is not tempted to recall Adam Armstrong from his loan spell with Coventry City.

The England Under-19s striker, who scored in the Young Lions’ 2-0 win over Macedonia last week, has fired in eight goals in nine League One matches since joining the Sky Blues until January on loan.

Meanwhile, back at St. James’ Park, the Magpies have yet to win a game in the Premier League this campaign leading to Coventry manager Tony Mowbray admitting that he fears losing the 18-year-old back to his parent club.

McClaren was quick to put to bed any speculation of an early return for the youngster, however, telling the Chronicle: “No, no, not yet. He’s better getting football and he’s at a good place to do that.”

Armstrong has been flourishing at the Ricoh Arena since his summer arrival and won the SkyBet League One Player of the Month award for January.

And McClaren says he is happy to continue monitoring the Geordie youngster’s performances rather than throw him into a potential relegation dogfight back at Newcastle.

“I have spoken to Tony Mowbray and he does like him. He set off like a house on fire after going there. He is in good hands at Coventry with Tony,” added McClaren.

“I am delighted he’s got recognised for his performances.”

Armstrong will be hoping to add to his tally when Coventry entertain Blackpool on Saturday afternoon.

Another Newcastle United and England youngster did return to the club early from a loan spell this week.

Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman had his spell at League Two Crawley Town cut short after injuries to Tim Krul and Karl Darlow.

The U19s shotstopper, who kept three clean sheets for the Young Lions in their recent European Championship qualifiers, goes straight into the squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash at home to Norwich City.
