Cray Valley PM’s player-manager Paul Gross took a hands-on approach to trying to secure his side’s progression into the second round but his two goals were not enough as they lost 5-4 to Knaphill after extra time.

Gross’ double contributed to the away side leading 4-2 with less than 20 minutes remaining but in the end they were knocked out of the competition after Knaphill’s Danny Taylor scored in stoppage time to send the match to extra time and then again in the 116th minute.

Gross opened the scoring after five minutes for the away side and then grabbed another early in the second half, after Valley’s Byron Walker and Knaphill’s Jamie Doble had found the net.

Charlie Postance made it 3-2 before Greg Benbow regained the two-goal advantage.

Matt Morris again reduced the deficit moments later before Taylor scored in the third minute of stoppage time and again in extra time.

A double from Matty Moffat helped Newton Aycliffe beat Chester-le-Street Town 4-0.

Dennis Knight’s penalty and Alan Harrison’s header mean Newton were already 2-0 up when Moffat grabbed his first on the half-hour mark.

And the summer signing from West Auckland then grabbed a second just a minute after the interval.

Buckland Athletic booked their place in the next round with relative ease, as Lloyd Gardner, Jared Lewington, Andy Robertson and Gavin Hammon (two) scored in the 5-0 win over New Milton Town.

Guisborough Town were irresistible as they beat Armthorpe Welfare 8-0.

Danny Earl grabbed a hat-trick and there were also goals for Andy May, Chay Liddle, Steve Snaith, Kurt Round and Danny McWilliams.

Halisham Town had Simon Stevens to thank for their progression against Gravesham Borough, winning 1-0, while Jamie Willets and John Mills scored in Hereford’s 2-0 win at Rocester.

Hengrove Athletic beat Gillingham Town 5-4 on penalties after their game was goalless.

Berkhamsted, Marske United and Colne all progressed thanks to 5-1 wins over Northampton Spencer, Congleton Town and Athersley Recreation respectively.

In the only Friday night game, Warren Byrne scored a late winner to send South Shields through at the expense of Bishop Auckland with a 2-1 win.

More than 800 fans watched on at Heritage Park as the visitors made it an incredible 14 victories on the bounce.

Thomas Bott was sent off for Bishops Auckland in the first half but South Shields did not open the scoring until just after the hour mark, when Ben Riding lofted a header over Mark Bell to make it 1-0.

Andrew Johnson equalised with penalty but a corner from former Sunderland and Middlesbrough fans’ favourite Julio Arca, five minutes from time, ended with Byrne sending the hundreds of visiting fans into rapture.
