Blackburn Rovers moved above Sporting Club Albion in the Northern Division standings thanks to an assured 2-0 home victory.

Albion started well and had an early effort ruled out for offside, but Lynda Shepherd responded for Rovers by firing a shot narrowly over the bar.

Shepherd was on hand again before half time, and this time she made sure she did not miss the target as she headed home Jess Holbrook’s cross to make the scoreline 1-0.

And the hosts shot out of the traps at the start of the second period, with Saffron Jordan popping up to double their lead six minutes after the restart.

Millie Chandarana and Natasha Fenton also went close for Rovers, but in the end the two-goal margin was enough to move them up to third in the table.

Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, although both sides will be disappointed not to have emerged with all three points in a game that went back and forth.

Emily Heckler opened the scoring for hosts Huddersfield, lobbing the keeper on 16 minutes, before Forest drew level through Meg Howard, who won the ball in Terriers territory before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the net.

The hosts were back in front just eight minutes later when Kelly Kennaugh was unlucky to deflect a wide free-kick into her own net, but Forest were back on level terms on the stroke of half-time when Andi Bell coolly converted a penalty.

And Bell put Forest ahead for the first time in the match after half-time, latching onto Shannon Weston’s through-ball, before beating the keeper and slotting the ball into an empty net to make it 3-2.

But Huddersfield were not done there and Heckler swept home a penalty of her own to earn her side a point on 77 minutes.

And Preston North End notched up their second victory of the season by thrashing Loughborough Foxes 5-1 at home.

Hannah Forster got her side off to the perfect start on 13 minutes, thumping home a rebound after Danielle Young’s shot was blocked on the line.

Young doubled the lead herself five minutes later, sliding the ball under the onrushing keeper after Paige Forster’s exceptional pass, and the tie was all but over inside the half hour when Chelsea Flanagan’s lob found the net.

Flanagan scored again on 32 minutes to put Preston out of sight by whipping Alice Forshaw’s cut-back into the top corner, but Loughborough did claw one back when Katie McLoughlin’s cross somehow lobbed Danielle Brown.

But the rout was complete on 52 minutes when a precise cross from Young left Keeleigh Savage with a simple tap-in at the front post.

Meanwhile Derby moved up to second in the table with a 2-1 home victory over Bradford City – Lauren Nicholls netting the winner – Stoke City beat Guiseley AFC Vixens 5-0. The clash between Nuneaton Town and Newcastle United was postponed.
