Paul Gascoigne burst on to the international scene exactly 27 years ago and went on to become an England legend.
Having made a name for himself at hometown club Newcastle United, and scooping the PFA Young Player of the Year for an impressive 1987-88 season for the Magpies, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur for a British record transfer fee of £2.2m.
Within two months he had received his first call-up from Three Lions boss Bobby Robson, and on 14 September 1988 the 21-year-old made his England debut in a Wembley friendly against Denmark.
Gazza's first goal for England
With his team leading 1-0 thanks to Neil Webb's first-half strike, Gazza came on to replace another ex-Newcastle man, Peter Beardsley, for the last five minutes.
He played in another friendly, against Saudi Arabia, in the November and his first goal arrived in his third appearance, on 26 April 1989.
Again, Gazza started on the bench in the World Cup qualifier at Wembley and was introduced as England were cruising 3-0 up against Albania.
Chris Waddle netted a fourth, then with two minutes remaining Gascoigne picked up the ball on the right, midway into the visitors' half.
He shrugged off a couple of challenges as he made his way into the box and, as the defence opened up, Gazza stroked home a left-footed shot to seal a comprehensive win.
Gascoigne went on to play 57 times for England over a 10-year spell, scoring 10 goals. You can relive his first in the FATV player above...
