The England international left-back was stretchered off early in the first half of Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat in Holland on Tuesday after he was chopped down by Hector Moreno.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but the 20-year-old was able to use his Twitter account to respond to his many well-wishers.
Thank you everyone for your messages , words can't describe how gutted I am , my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger.

United confirmed the injury following the game via the club's Twitter account, saying: "Our thoughts go out to @LukeShaw23, who has suffered a double fracture of the leg. He will have an operation on his return to Manchester."
Despite the devastating blow to their young defender, the Red Devils managed to take the lead through Memphis Depay, but Moreno levelled before the break.
Luciano Narsingh then headed in a 57th-minute winner despite the visitors, who were captained by England centre-back Chris Smalling, dominating for long periods.
“I didn’t see it, but I know a few of the players did see it and it’s a very sad time. Of course we wish him a full recovery,” Smalling said of his team-mate’s injury afterwards on BT Sport.
“We haven’t heard anything as yet, but we’ll be trying to find that out when we get chance.”
Without England captain and striker Rooney through injury, United lacked the cutting edge to turn their dominance into goals, and Smalling believes that is what proved to be their downfall.
“In the first half they scored from their only chance and then we gave it away on the edge of our box and they punished us – those were their only two real chances. It’s a very disappointing night,” he added.
“We scored a good goal and couldn’t really kick on from that. If you don’t take your chances and the other team do, then you get well and truly punished like we have.”
The Premier League leaders Manchester City also tasted defeat in the Champions League as they also let a one-goal advantage slip against the Italian champions Juventus.
The Citizens, who had Three Lions keeper Joe Hart and forward Raheem Sterling within their line up, looked to be on course for victory when Juve's Giorgio Chiellini netted into his own net under pressure from Vincent Kompany.
But with 20 minutes remaining Mario Mandzukic stole in behind Eliaquim Mangala for the equaliser before Alvaro Morata curled an impressive strike beyond Hart for the winner.
Elsewhere it was a busy night of games in the Championship with plenty of England youth international players on show.
U20s international Ben Osborn helped Nottingham Forest move up to seventh as they recorded a 1-0 win at Birmingham City. Fellow Young Lions ace Demarai Gray was unable to make an impact for the hosts after stepping off the bench on 63 minutes.
U21s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was in fine form for Preston against Bristol City, pulling off a number of finger tip saves before eventually being beaten with nine minutes remaining as his side drew 1-1 at Deepdale.
Third-placed Hull City, containing another U20s man Moses Odubajo in their starting line up, won 2-0 at Cardiff City. Chuba Akpom also appeared off the bench to replace second goal scorer Abel Hernandez for the final ten minutes.
U19s midfielder Lewis Cook started Leeds United’s home game against Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ Ipswich Town, but he could not prevent them slipping to their first defeat of the season.
