Their cup campaign may be over for another year but Reading will be doing everything in their power to try and chase down FA WSL 2 leaders Doncaster Rovers Belles, according to forward Helen Ward.

The Royals currently sit second in the league, three points behind the Belles but crucially with a game in hand.

Their next match comes in the form of a trip to face bottom side Watford on Sunday while they have another three league games left after that.

And while Reading may have lost out to Notts County in the quarter-final of the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup last time out, Ward insists there will be no hangover from that defeat.

“Our main focus has always been in the league and I think we will just keep playing and keep the momentum to get points,” she said.

“We have been up there for a while now and we have all the points to play for and we could get promoted.

“The results went our way at the weekend when Doncaster drew with Everton which helped us massively.

“We know that Donny are three points ahead at the moment but it is up to us to catch them, whoever does win the league we know that a fantastic team has won, we need to go into every game aiming to get the three points.

“Watford has been struggling in the league. We won 3-1 against them last time but we were disappointed in how we played.

“They have a young team and they show a lot of fight and even though they do not have a lot of experience but each game they play they get the experience they need.”

Watford meanwhile come into the match in high spirits having recorded their first victory in 14 matches in all competitions, courtesy of a 3-2 away victory over London Bees in the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup last Sunday.

And with the chance to get back out in front of their home fans at Berkhamsted, goalkeeper Shayla Burgess was looking to build up some momentum for the final stretch of the season.  “It’s very important to pick up points at home in our remaining games of the season,” she said. “It’s our home ground, we love playing there and we’re very proud to play at home.

“Everyone loves playing at home, especially with all our loyal fans there to support us. So it was great to give them something back and to get a win for them today.”

“It’s very important for us to finish the season strongly because we want to end on a high note, and if we can do that it’s all good building blocks for next season.”
