Chelsea Ladies top WSL 1 table ahead of final fixtures

Gemma Davison believes Chelsea can thrive under pressure and win the FA WSL 1 title after beating her former club Liverpool 4-0 to ensure they go into the final day on top of the league.

Davison won the title with Liverpool last season, at Chelsea’s expense, but the Blues are in pole position – two points clear of second-placed Manchester City – after Ji So-Yun’s double and goals for England strikers Fran Kirby and Eni Aluko.

And Davison believes her "world class" team-mates have what it takes to get over the line in FA Women’s Super League 1 with BT Sport, after showing their clinical touch in front of goal.

"The best teams thrive under pressure and I felt we dealt with it very well," she said.

"You have to be able to thrive under that pressure to get over the line in the title race and there’s a lot of world class players in this team.

"We were solid all over the pitch and I think we’ve done that all season. We’re top of the league and will go into next week feeling confident.

"The mood in the dressing room is amazing. We’re very together. We put the ball in the back of the net four times and we’re deadly in front of goal."

Liverpool twice hit the woodwork with the scores level – Ingrid Ryland clattering the post on 27 minutes before Gemma Bonner headed against the bar moments later.

But after riding their luck, Ji – who Davison hailed as one of the best in the world – fired in a superb opener on 30 minutes, controlling Davison’s cross, swivelling and firing into the top corner.

Hedvig Lindahl turned Katie Zelem’s long-range strike over at full-stretch five minutes later, but Kirby added the second on 40 minutes, finishing from close-range after Aluko picked her out unmarked in the middle.

Aluko then added the third on 55 minutes, when Satara Murray failed to control Martha Harris’ pass and gifted the England striker an easy finish.

Ji wrapped up victory on 78 minutes after Davison darted into the area and presented her with a simple tap-in.

And Liverpool captain Gemma Bonner admitted Chelsea showed their class in front of goal.

"It was disappointing for us," she said. "We started the game well and hit the woodwork twice but we’re disappointed with how we conceded the goals.

"But Chelsea are top of the league for a reason and they’ve proved why.

"Goals win you games and that’s something we’ve struggled with this season. I thought we were probably the best side in the first half but Chelsea put their chances away and we didn’t.

"But we’re not giving anything up. We still have a lot to play for and we’ll regroup. The Continental Tyres Cup is still a big aim for us."
