Wayne Rooney played his first game in almost two months as he returned from a knee injury to feature for Manchester United's under-21s on Monday evening.
The England captain has been missing since 13 February, meaning he was absent from the squad for last month's friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands.
But he has returned in good time ahead of this summer's European Championships, with Roy Hodgson set to name his squad for the finals next month.
Rooney played 61 minutes for United's development side as they beat Middlesbrough in the Under-21 Premier League at Old Trafford.
The 30-year-old could now be part of the United side that travels to West Ham on Wednesday evening to replay their drawn Emirates FA Cup quarter-final, with a trip to face Everton at Wembley hanging in the balance.
Last week, midfielder Jack Wilshere made his first appearance of the 2015-16 season when he lined up for Arsenal's under-21s in their victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
Was nice to be back playing last night, huge step on the way to full fitness. Thanks to all the fans that came out … pic.twitter.com/bn9LGsSDzJ

Three Lions boss Hodgson said last month that both players would have a good chance of going to EURO 2016, should they prove their fitness before the season's end.
