Two of football’s oldest clubs met in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.
Worksop Town, the fourth oldest club in existence having been formed in 1861, defeated Hallam, the second oldest club in the world, in the extra preliminary round.
The tie had added significance for Hallam, who in 1867 won the Youdan Cup – a competition named after local football enthusiast Thomas Youdan – which is believed to be football’s first cup competition and the oldest football trophy in the world.

Sandy Lane, Handsworth Parramore FC
Winning club to receive £1,500
The cup itself has been valued at over £100,000 and remains the property of Hallam FC, who, in 2017 will celebrate the 150th anniversary of that success.
To mark the occasion, the Emirates FA Cup travelled to Sandy Lane to join the Youdan Cup on display for the very first time.
Hallam chairman Steve Basford said: “It was a great honour to have the Emirates FA Cup with us at the game and to be able to celebrate two of the oldest football tournaments with two of the oldest trophies displayed together.
“And it was great that two of the oldest clubs in the world could celebrate the opening fixture of the 150th anniversary season of the 1867 Youdan Trophy win.
“We'd also like to thank Worksop Town for their hospitality on a lovely summer's day, and of course everyone at The FA for helping to make a very memorable event happen.
“Hopefully one day soon the Emirates FA Cup will have the blue and white ribbons of Hallam FC on it.”
Worksop Town picked up £1,500 from The FA prize fund and will entertain Ashton Athletic in the preliminary round on Saturday 20 August.
