Spurs continue unbeaten streak to reach the SSE Women's FA Cup second round

Tottenham Hotspur ensured their unbeaten start to the season remained intact with a narrow 1-0 victory over Leyton Orient to progress to the second round of The SSE Women’s FA Cup.

The game looked to be heading for penalties until the 76th minute, when Wendy Martin headed the ball home, before Sophie McLean missed a penalty for FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division leaders Spurs.

Northern Division pace-setters Middlesbrough also needed just a solitary strike to confirm their place in the second-round hat, Millie Bell with the honours as they defeated Hartlepool United.

Charlton Athletic came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 after Pam McRoberts had given the Eagles the lead at Selhurst Park, but late goals from Rosey Sullivan and Charley Clifford tipped the tie on its head.

Sophie Domingo and Kim Farrow were among the goalscorers as Leicester City ran out 3-0 victors away to Birmingham & West Midlands, but it was disappointment for Leicester City Women Development as they suffered defeat.

A strike from Kimberley Brown and an own goal sealed a 2-0 victory for Sheffield United over the Foxes at Bramall Lane, while C&K Basildon prevailed with the same scoreline away to Acle United.

But there was disappointment for the Steel City’s other side as Sheffield Wednesday suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat away to Radcliffe Olympic, with Cardiff City also finishing six goals to the good with no reply against Larkhall Athletic.

Gillingham eased past Southampton Saints 7-1, while Liverpool Marshalls Feds progressed on penalties after drawing 1-1 with Stoke City.

Elsewhere, Cambridge United defeated QPR 3-1, with Newcastle United dispatching RACA Tynedale 3-0.

Two goals from Sarah Kempson either side of half-time, as well as strikes from Tash Stephens and Rebecca Bell, saw Portsmouth progress with a 4-1 victory over Luton Town, with the Hatters scoring a late consolation goal through Nicola Henman.

It was the same result between West Bromwich Albion and Fylde, with the Baggies advancing thanks to goals from Leigh Dugmore, Abi Cottam (2) and Trina Greaves, with the visitors’ goalscorer Danielle Young sent off.

Two from Dani Lane, as well as strikes from Georgia Bridges, Kim Stenning and debutant Hayley Bridge, saw Lewes put five unanswered goals past Brislington, while AFC Wimbledon came from behind to defeat Norwich City 4-1 and Milton Keynes Dons prevailed 3-1 against Hemel Hempstead Town.

Hull City and Keynsham Town both ran out 6-1 winners to Norton & Stockton Ancients and Regents Park Rangers respectively, as Brighouse Town edged a 3-2 victory over Peterborough Northern Star.

There were comfortable victories for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry United as they defeated Solihull and West Ham 4-0 and 3-0 respectively, while Huddersfield Town lost to Derby County 1-0.

One goal was the decider too in the ties between Bradford City and Blackburn Rovers, and Guiseley AFC Vixens and Nottingham Forest, with Rovers and Forest both progressing 1-0.

Both Long Eaton United and Plymouth Argyle were awarded walkovers after Nuneaton Town and Forest Green Rovers respectively withdrew from their ties, while Southampton versus Swindon Town was postponed.
