England defender Nathaniel Clyne believes the strong competition for places in the Three Lions squad can only be a good thing.
The Liverpool right-back started his first game at Euro 2016 against Slovakia in Monday’s final group match, after previously seeing Kyle Walker impress in the role during the first two fixtures.
And the 25-year-old felt he did his selection justice as Roy Hodgson made six changes for the game in Saint-Etienne, where a 0-0 draw was enough to confirm England’s spot in the last 16.
"I was pleased with my performance," said the former Crystal Palace and Southampton man.
"The manager made changes and we all came in and did well.
"It's good that everyone is fighting for positions, it makes the team healthy and makes everyone push harder.
"He's [Walker] done really well, all of the starting line-up that's been playing have done well, but this was a chance for those coming in to show the manager that they should be in the team."
England know they will be heading to Nice in the south of France for their next game, against the second-placed side from Group F on Monday 27 June.
This will be either Portugal, Austria, Hungary or Iceland, but Clyne is not too concerned about who England face but more keen to focus on the performance.
"We've got one job to do and that's to win the game and that's it," added Clyne, who reached the Euros semi-final with England U19s in France in 2010.
"We dominated the [Slovakia] game from start to finish. It was a bit frustrating that we didn't get the goal which would have won us the game."
