The 2016 FA Women’s Super League campaign will be one “full of drama and intrigue”, says Kelly Simmons.
The FA’s football participation and development director was speaking at St. George’s Park, where the new FA WSL season is being officially launched ahead of next week’s opening round of fixtures.
“As we enter into our sixth year of WSL, the game feels like it is in a really strong position and ready to build on the momentum of last season,” Simmons told a crowd that included players and staff from the 19 WSL clubs, plus pupils from William Shrewsbury Primary School in Shrewsbury.
“2015 was a real landmark year for us”

“2015 was a real landmark year for us with average attendances in WSL 1 hitting over 1,000 for the first time, while we also saw some great work at clubs in WSL 2 consolidating and building on their fanbases.
“We know that supporters are attracted to the exciting and competitive football that the WSL has become known for – none more evident than on yet another final day title decider which saw Chelsea lift the trophy for the first time.
“We’re expecting more of the same this year and it’s safe to say there will be no easy game. Today’s launch sets the tone for what should be a season full of drama and intrigue.”
