England Under-21s' Lewis Baker hoping to keep on finding the net with free-kicks

Tuesday 15 Nov 2016

England Under-21s midfielder Lewis Baker took his tally to seven goals in 12 games for the Young Lions, but couldn’t prevent a 3-2 defeat against France.

The Chelsea midfielder, currently on loan with Vitesse Arnhem, struck home a perfect free-kick to equalise in Bandoufle only for the hosts to snatch a winner with a similar set-piece from Wylan Cyprien moments later.

And it left Baker and his team-mates frustrated as they lost their first game in 16 games, as preparations for next summer’s Euro took shape.

“I thought the boys were decent today, and we can still improve, definitely,” he said.

“I thought the ref had an okay game, but two decisions didn’t go our way and they scored from both of those.

“This is what we need though, we need to play teams like this and they’re great opponents to play against to really test ourselves.

“I thought today, the boys did themselves justice.”

Baker’s free-kick was just as eye-catching as those conjured up by Cyprien and Moussa Dembele though, which comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen the Luton-born youngster practising his set-piece shooting after training.

“That’s what the practice is for, the moments like this,” he explained.

“I just want to keep practising and hopefully more and more will go in.”
