The FA has further strengthened its technical division at St George’s Park with the appointment of Bryce Cavanagh as head of physical performance and nutrition.
The leadership role is a key addition within team strategy and performance and will see Cavanagh working strategically across all England teams as well as specifically with the men’s senior team.
The 39-year-old brings with him a wealth of international specialist knowledge and experience in physical performance across a range of sports including rugby union, AFL and cricket.
Cavanagh, born in Sydney, joins The FA from the Melbourne Rebels rugby union team, where he was head of performance since 2013.
Prior to that, he was head of physical performance at Munster Rugby for two years, joining the Irish side from the Sydney Swans in 2011. Cavanagh has also enjoyed spells with the West Indies cricket team and the New South Wales Waratahs.
Dave Reddin, The FA’s head of team strategy and performance, said: “We are delighted that Bryce is joining us in what is a key leadership role. He was recruited following a global search and has an outstanding CV, both in terms of qualifications and experience across a range of different sports in three different countries.
“Bryce will be responsible for developing a detailed philosophy for physical performance and nutrition for our national teams to support our strategy of giving our elite teams the best possible support for success.”
Cavanagh said: “This is a huge honour for me to be joining The FA at what is an incredibly exciting time. The continuing investment into elite England teams and the potential this creates makes this opportunity one that I’m thrilled to be taking up.”
