The Emirates FA Cup hit the road for the first time this season on a special visit to Framlingham Town, as the Suffolk club prepares to compete in the competition for the first time in its history.
The Eastern Counties League team is due to host fellow debutants Wadham Lodge in the extra preliminary round on Saturday 5 August, as the world’s best-loved domestic cup competition kicks-off this weekend.
The famous piece of silverware was joined at the club by Brian Parker and Sydney Vice, president and life vice president respectively, who have both been involved in the club for over 50 years and Mel Aldis, the first team manager whose two sons play in the first team.
Fiona Whatling, Framlingham Town’s club secretary, said: “To have the trophy visit Framlingham Town has been amazing, it really is a dream come true for both the players and our staff – some of whom have been here over fifty years.
"Everyone at the club is looking forward to playing our first game in the competition this weekend – you can feel the excitement across the whole town.”
This season’s Emirates FA Cup competition begins on Friday evening, with 737 teams taking part across the country, including 21 teams playing for the first time.
Winners in the extra preliminary round of the competition will receive £1,500 in prize money.
David Newton, The FA’s head of player status and competitions, added: “The Emirates FA Cup inspires fans, players and clubs to believe that anything is possible.
"It’s a competition that is truly for all, and we are delighted to welcome 21 new teams – including Framlingham Town – to the competition this season. We wish all clubs competing across the country in The Emirates FA Cup this weekend the very best of luck.”
