Litherland REMYCA passed their screen test with flying colours as they bested Merseyside rivals AFC Liverpool in the extra preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.
From this season, BBC Sport will be providing live coverage of a game from every qualifying round of the world’s original cup competition across its digital channels.
Litherland, who have entered the competition for the first time in their history, welcomed TV cameras to their Bootle home, with their clash against their North West Counties League rivals commentated on by Match of the Day’s Conor McNamara and former Watford and Sheffield United striker Danny Webber.
With 67 minutes on the clock, striker Colin McDonald savoured his moment in the spotlight as he tucked home after Alex Ryan’s shot was saved by the visiting goalie.
And the hosts’ dream day was rounded off five minutes from time when teenager Lennon Whewell beat the offside trap and deftly lobbed goalie Dom Garner to round things off in front of 312 fans at the Litherland Sports Park.
A full 185 extra preliminary round ties will have taken place by Sunday evening and elsewhere on Saturday, Tuffley Rovers saw off newly-promoted Hellenic League Premier Division side Woodley United.
Brett James cut inside and slotted home Tuffley’s opener before Ashley Davies doubled the visitors’ lead, with Danny Horscroft grabbing Woodley’s second-half consolation effort as Rovers ran out 2-1 winners.
Blaby & Whetstone Athletic won 4-2 at fellow East Midlands Counties League outfit Kimberley Miners Welfare.
The tie saw three penalties awarded, with the home side, who were trailing 3-1, missing from 12 yards before converting again with another spot-kick that was awarded afterwards.
However, Blaby skipper Tom Hill rounded things with the third and final penalty of the afternoon to book his side’s place in the preliminary round.
