England manager Gareth Southgate has sent his congratulations to Wayne Rooney, who this afternoon became Manchester United’s record goalscorer.

Rooney is already England’s leading male scorer, having surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton in September 2015.

And the Three Lions captain followed suit at club level on Saturday, scoring his 250th goal to earn United a 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

Southgate immediately offered his reaction to TheFA.com, noting that Rooney had overtaken Charlton at both international and domestic level.

“When you look at whose record he has broken and the way that Sir Bobby is revered in this country and by his club, it shows you what an achievement it is,” said Southgate, who will attend the Football Writers Association's tribute to Rooney on Sunday evening.

“To be leading goalscorer for United – overtaking Sir Bobby – and for England is an incredible achievement.

“To have scored that many goals then you have got to have performed so consistently over such a long period of time which is a mark of an outstanding player. Wayne has managed to achieve that.”
