Aidy happy with Euro draw

England Under-21s interim boss Aidy Boothroyd reflects on Euro 2019 qualifying group

Thursday 26 Jan 2017

England Under-21s interim head coach Aidy Boothroyd believes fans have plenty to look forward to when the new Euro qualifying campaign kicks-off.

The Young Lions were drawn out to play Netherlands, Scotland, Ukraine, Latvia and Andorra in their group, as the qualification race for the 2019 Euro Finals in Italy was set out.

And with eye-catching fixtures such a derby with neighbours Scotland and against the Dutch, Boothroyd came away from Thursday morning’s draw in Nyon in a positive mood.

“I think whoever we got, it was going to be difficult whether it’s the quality of the team you’re playing or the travelling you might have to do,” he told TheFA.com.

“It’s a tough group, but it’s a group in which we haven’t done too badly on the travelling aspect and there’s a couple of really exciting fixtures in there.

“The Scots will be tough, they always are. It’s a derby game and we haven’t had one of those at U21 level for a little while.

“And the Dutch are always very strong and will always be well organised, so it will be a tough couple of games.

“Ukraine is a bit of an unknown quantity, they’ve had some good wins against bigger nations, so there’s lots of ‘watch outs’ in the group.

“Any team at this level is capable of an upset and I think that makes it even more important that we’re switched on to our jobs and roles to make sure we get the points needed to qualify for the tournament so our players can grow, develop and become better footballers at international level.”

But the game which incites the most anticipation for players and fans alike is the meeting with our ‘Auld Enemy’ from north of the border.

With the nations also paired up in the same senior men’s World Cup qualifying group and at the group stages of this summer’s Women’s Euro Finals, the Young Lions will also be looking to claim bragging-rights over Ricky Sbragia’s side.

“It’s a big game which the fans can look forward to,” added Boothroyd.

“The last game in the group is against the Scots and we’ve got them early on in the campaign as well, so it’s really exciting for us as a group.

“We’ve obviously got the 2017 championships coming up, but it’s really good draw for us.”

The squad for 2019 can be drawn from players born on or after 1 January 1996, so those capped recently at U21 level such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Demarai Gray (pictured above), Dominic Solanke, Angus Gunn, Ben Chilwell, Brendan Galloway, Mason Holgate and Tammy Abraham can all feature again whilst the squad who will play in the U20 World Cup this summer will also be eligible.

The fixture dates for all of the qualifying games will be confirmed in due course.
