Last season’s runners up Manchester City eased into The FA Youth Cup quarter-finals after a comfortable 4-0 win over Southampton at the Academy Stadium.
Unbeaten since April last year, the Blues had one foot in the last-eight after 45 minutes as goals from Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Lukas Nmecha put them in the driving seat.
Demeaco Duhaney then added a fourth midway through the second half to add gloss to the scoreline.
It was actually Southampton who started the brighter with Jonathan Afolabi twice going close to opening the scoring.
But the deadlock was eventually broken by City on 26 minutes as left-back Duhaney slipped a pass to Foden who managed to pull his shot through a crowd of players into the net.
The hosts doubled their advantage on 40 minutes as Sancho, minutes after seeing another shot deflected wide, finished well from Brahim Diaz’s cross.
There was still time for a third before the break as Nmecha tapped in from close range to finish off a super passing move by City.
After the break Sancho almost got his second after his curling effort hit the post.
Tom Dele-Bashiru then saw his own low drive hit the woodwork on 71 minutes – but fortunately for the hosts, Duhaney was on hand to finish it off for 4-0 and kill the game off.
