England’s World Cup match-winner Dominic Calvert-Lewin was lost for words after firing the Young Lions to the U20 title.

The Everton striker broke the deadlock in the first half of a tight game with Venezuela with what turned out to be the winning goal.

And as one of the newer faces in the squad, having only made his international debut at the start of this season before switching from Sheffield United to Everton, it’s like a Roy Of The Rovers tale for the 20-year-old.

“Words can’t describe right now what I’m feeling, I’m just trying to take it all in,” said the 20-year-old, who had spent time on loan with Stalybridge Celtic and Northampton Town before getting his break at Bramall Lane.

“I was knackered from the celebration, but honestly, words just can’t describe it all.”

The victory sees Paul Simpson’s side become the first England team to win the World Cup since the heroes of 1966 won it on home soil at Wembley.

And Calvert-Lewin and his squad-mates will now go down in history ahead of a jubilant return home on Monday.

“It means everything,” he added, on the prospect of bringing the trophy home.

“It’s what you dream of as a kid, playing for your country and winning a World Cup.”
