Match-winner Ellen White could not contain her delight after her goal gave England a famous victory over USA in the SheBelieves Cup.
The 27-year-old prodded home in the final minute after Lucy Bronze’s 20-yarder smashed against crossbar to give the Lionesses just their fourth-ever win over the World Cup holders – and inflict the first home defeat on USA in 23 matches.
White said: “To get the win, to get the goal, to beat USA on home soil; I’m pretty ecstatic to be honest.
“The team did so well, I’m so proud of them.
“We needed a big win in this tournament. I’m buzzing, absolutely buzzing.”
That result catapulted Mark Sampson’s side to second place in the prestigious round-robin tournament, just a point behind European and Olympic champions Germany, who they face in their final match in Washington next Tuesday.
And the victory came just three days after Wendie Renard’s 95th-minute winner consigned England to an agonising defeat.
White added: “Mark wanted us to bounce back and show our winning mentality. We definitely showed that.
“We showed the togetherness of the team, we showed drive, we showed professionalism and ultimately we scrapped [and] we fought. That’s what we do.”
She continued: “Everyone is buzzing and we’re looking forward to playing Germany now.
“We’ve got points on the board and we’re looking forward to going to Washington.
“This is like a final now.”
