England U17s captain Marc Guéhi says Young Lions aim to change perceptions at Euros

Thursday 04 May 2017

England Under-17s captain Marc Guéhi says the Young Lions are out to thrill at this summer’s UEFA European U17 Championship.

Head coach Steve Cooper has handed the Chelsea defender the armband for the 17-day showpiece in Croatia.

UEFA European U17 Championship
  • The Finals
  • Norway v England: 1pm, Thursday 4 May 2017
  • England v Ukraine: 1pm, Sunday 7 May 2017
  • Netherlands v England: 3pm, Wednesday 10 May 2017
  • Zagreb, Croatia

The tournament is the first chance for young players to make their competitive mark on the international stage, but Guéhi sees a wider responsibility to hopefully signal the dawn of an exciting new era in English football.

"We're trying to change perceptions as an England team,” said the 16-year-old.

“People will have a certain view of a typical England team from over previous years, but we want to be seen as a side who can be solid defensively but play good attacking football.

"We want to be a team who are exciting to watch and hopefully score a lot of goals."

"Training has been good, the ball has been popping and zipping so hopefully we can take what we're doing in training and put it into games.”

Guéhi, who joined Chelsea at the age of seven, has already represented the Young Lions at U15 and U16 level over the last few seasons.

And now he’s ready to lead the U17s pack into the biggest moment of their fledging careers, after a successful qualifying campaign which saw Cooper's men top both of their group stages to reach Croatia.

"It's a great honour being named captain," he added.

"There has been some great captains over the years, especially at this age level who have won this tournament before [in 2010 and 2014]. I'm privileged to lead my country, it’s an amazing feeling at such a young age.

"However, I know I need to take this into my stride and hopefully help the team to proceed in the tournament.”

England's Group D opener against Norway will be shown live on Eurosport in the UK, kicking-off at 1pm.
