Lewis Cook speaks to the media ahead of England's FIFA U20 World Cup opening group match against Argentina

Midfielder Lewis Cook believes England should be shooting for the stars at the U20 World Cup.

The Young Lions kick off a testing group against the tournament’s most successful ever nation Argentina on Saturday, then meet Guinea and conclude against hosts South Korea.

But with one defeat in their last nine matches, Bournemouth youngster Cook is full of confidence.

“I think we can go all the way,” said the 20-year-old.

“The strength in depth in the squad is great. We have individuals that can change a game in an instant. As a team we’re strong and we’ll fight to the end, so we have a good chance.

“It will be good to come up against different nationalities, improving your knowledge, coming up against different styles of play and an overall understanding of the game. I think everyone will learn a lot from the tournament.

“Argentina have won the tournament the most times out of everyone, so it will be a tough test but we’ve played a lot of top nations and held our own, so I don’t see why we can’t do the same again and get the win.”

Cook was part of the squad that won the European Under-17 Championship in 2014, starting three of the five matches during the tournament.

He was one of seven members of that squad to have been selected by coach Paul Simpson to be in South Korea.

But Cook, who joined Bournemouth from Leeds United last summer, insists such familiarity will certainly not breed contempt.

“It’s everyone’s dream. Even when you put on the shirt it still feels like your dreaming,” he added.

“You can’t take that for granted, we’re here representing our country and we’ve got to cherish every moment.

“A lot of us have been together since the Under-16s, we have some great players and big names.

“We are a close group, we do everything together. We’ve been together a long time and that shows on the pitch and off the pitch too.”

Previous winners of the player of the tournament award, known as the Golden Ball, include Paul Pogba, Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

Cook is hopeful come the final on 11 June an English name can be added to that illustrious list.

“Hopefully some of us can follow in their footsteps,” he said.

“When we see players that have been in competitions like this before, it’s an inspiration.

“Emulating them is something we want to do.”
