A star turn from goalkeeper Tony McMillan saw Warrington Town overcome Ashton United to book their place in Buildbase FA Trophy third round qualifying.
On Tuesday night, the Yellows defeated their Northern Premier League rivals on penalties following a 2-2 draw but were indebted to the heroics of McMillan, who saved twice from 12 yards – once in normal time and once in the shootout – to lead his team to victory.
Jamie McDonald’s first-half double had Warrington well in control but Jay Dyche hit back for the Robins before they were handed a spot-kick when McMillan brought down Nic Evangelinos.
The Warrington stopper made up for his misjudgement by keeping out Dyche’s penalty and, although the Ashton striker did head home a dramatic late equaliser to force extra-time, McMillan went on to save well from James McCarten to help the Yellows win the shootout by 4-2.
Their success sets up a trip to Tamworth in the next round later this month.
Elsewhere, Hereford, who travel to League One Fleetwood Town in the second round proper of the Emirates FA Cup in December, were also victorious in a second round qualifying replay – they won 2-1 at Potters Bar Town.
Despite their team bus breaking down en-route to Hertfordshire and kick-off being delayed by 30 minutes, Lance Smith and an own goal from Chris Doyle sent them through to third round qualifying, with Rokas Janilionis hitting the hosts’ consolation effort late on.
Moneyfields and Cray Wanderers set up a second round qualifying replay after drawing 1-1 in a tie postponed due to a waterlogged pitch last weekend.
On Monday night, three more sides booked their places in the third round qualifying, with Kingstonian beating Ashford Town 2-0, Haringey Borough edging out Sittingbourne 1-0 and Taunton Town overcoming Beaconsfield Town 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate.
Meanwhile, in the only Buildbase FA Trophy replay to be played on Wednesday night, Cleethorpes Town pulled off an upset by beating higher league opposition in the shape of Hednesford Town.
The Northern Premier League South side came back from a goal down to win 2-1 on the night after the teams had drawn 1-1 in Staffordshire at the weekend.
The Owls scored through Jonathan Oglesby and Danny North and will now host National League North side Spennymoor Town in the third qualifying round.
